2:18 pm - Back from the (near) dead

No, I will not sum up because the too much has parts of All Awesome.

Right, so I think I left of sometime before Dragon*Con where I was complaining that there was still too much to do and I was actually ill.

That ill lingered through Dragon*Con and today is the first day I actually feel like myself again.  I was sick with a sinus infection all through Con. I have no idea how my head did not explode on the plane ride home.  Tuesday after we got back I went to the doc and was diagnosed with no mere sinus infection, but a "raging" sinus infection that landed me on tetracycline.  Awesome, I am on my way back to health.  Wrong.

Two days after I started the antibiotics my head started feeling less like an overinflated balloon but came with a very bizarre visual disconnect with the world, like I was looking at everything through a fish-eye lens, sometimes accompanied by a subtle vertigo that I could tell had nothing to do with my vestibular system.  It was kind of like all the descriptions I ever got from people who were taking SSRI's for ADHD.  I didn't feel like myself at all.  I barely tolerated this for another 4 days (mostly because there was a weekend and the doc's offices were closed) but I went back in the following Monday and said, "This is not OK."  He said, "Yes, and you don't get to take tetracycline anymore either."  Turns out I'd had a very rare reaction that increased my intracranial pressure.  In layman's terms, it made something in my spinal cord and brain go wonky and increase the pressure in my skull which put pressure on my brain.  Concussions can do this, and the symptoms were pretty similar.  Yes, this is Fucking Scary and I do not recommend it for anyone.  And oh yeah, you still have a sinus infection and now you have an ear infection too.  Fuck you, microbes.

So he put me on azythromycin, and now I AM BACK.  And so, at last,

Dragon*Con pictures and wrap!Collapse )

3:24 pm - I will have no hair come Dragon*Con
Finished the scabbard, hunting quiver, sword frog, armor chest piece, skirt faulds, and shoulder/midwrap.

Abandoning the back quiver, no time to pattern it correctly.

Patterned the pauldron, cutting tonight.

Sword is partially hafted, leather needs finishing and then shaping/attaching the pommel.  Must get screw to solder to sword tang.

Braid pretty wire piece to inlay into handle.

Need to pattern the vambraces, might cheat.  A lot.  Might only do one for the left arm as a bowguard.

Might need to abandon the boots and wear store-bought.

Need to figure out how to efficiently peace-tie the sword.

Need to finish the bow and get bigger pliers to extract strung-bow policy from Dragon*Con staff.  To wit:

Me: I would just like a clarification on bows- I plan to have a costume of an
Elven scout and would like to have a bow with arrows. The arrows will be
made entirely of paper. The arrows will be fixed in their quivers and will
not be able to be drawn. Am I permitted to have the bow strung? It has no
flex to speak of and can't shoot anything (even paper arrows) more than a
couple of feet.

Them:  The convention has a peace-bonding policy. That means that edged weapons
should not be removed from their protective scabbards or sheaths at any
time. If an edged weapon has no such protection, the edges must be covered
in some manner considered adequate by the on-duty Security Shift Leader.
Under no circumstances should the weapon in question, protected or not, be
brandished or swung about unless in a convention program specifically for
that action. Replica firearms should not be removed from their holsters. It
is a felony in the State of Georgia to brandish a replica weapon (GA code
16-7-85.a). We are not law enforcement agents, but we do not want anyone
hurt out of a misunderstanding. In each of the above cases, the weapon
should be secured to the sheath, scabbard or holster by means of peace

Peace Bonding

In order for a weapon to be peace-bonded, it must be tied into the scabbard,
sheath or holster in such a way that it cannot be removed. The standard we
prefer is based on a minimum of thirty seconds of effort to untie (or
directly cutting) the cords would be required for removal. Convention
Security personnel must do the peace-bonding using brightly colored yarn or
nylon cord. This makes the bonding easily visible to Security personnel and
will reduce excessive interference in the attendees' pleasure. Please note
that snaps or leather thongs do not constitute peace bonding under this
policy. (The colorful bonding may distract slightly from the costume's
appearance, but this is how we maintain everyone's safety.)

Due to a clerical error, you were charged shipping for your 2012 Dragon*Con
Parade tee shirt. We are crediting your account for the shipping charges.
We here at Dragon*Con are truly sorry about the error, and will work quickly
to ensure our greatest satisfaction with our fans.

Me again: Note that there is NO MENTION OF BOWS OR ARROWS.

Just sayin'.

And if anyone has a Wand of Healing with a few charges left in it for my WHOLE SICK-ASS HOUSE I can borrow I will compensate you handsomely for the used charges.

2:08 pm - Moving along...
So, yeah, busy busy busy.

I finally got the Horn shipped off yesterday.  I decided that I didn't want to give the Postal Inspector a reason to open the box and so I let the (flammable) epoxy putty dry another 24 hours so it wouldn't set off their sniffers and lead them to believe there might be a bomb inside.  Details. So, Boromir can finally blow his horn sometime around the 3rd.  The stamp for the belt is being manufactured for me.  I finally had to admit defeat on making it myself.  It should be arriving sometime early next week.  After that, the belt will go very quickly.

The Scout is progressing nicely, I am beginning to believe it will actually get done, despite an anxiety dream where I was wearing the whole costume but the handle was missing from my sword.  I have revised my plans for it and it will now be stacked leather, not wood.  I still have some grand ideas for some shiny stuff on it, but I will construct the handle so that if there isn't time, it will still look good.

And now, some progress!

I still haven"t put it all on all at once yet...Collapse )

1:30 pm - I finished a piece!
Ok, so it's just the belt, so no real celebrating yet, but:

Close up of the detail.  All the leaves have a silver wash.

And just for grins, the progress on the scabbard:

The leather thong wrap is to keep the leather flat while the glue is drying.  It's not actually part of the piece.

I discovered last night that the sword will in fact need a frog hanger.  More work, but also more opportunity for carving.  Yay!

9:29 am - No pics yet, but...
This weekend I:

-finished blocking the scabbard and assembled it.
-cut, carved, dyed and glued the leather covering to the scabbard.
-designed the metal decoration for the tip of the scabbard.
-edged, carved, and dyed the sword belt.
-cut out pieces for and began sewing the boots.
-placed hardware on the back quiver strap (think the strap that goes around Legolas' chest).
-even more painting.
-Finished! the hunting quiver except for the garnet leaf inlay and the arrow strip (will be designed so the arrows go in and do not come out well to appease security)
-detached the pretty wood veneer from the flooring samples.

Still to do:
-finish the chest piece so it will lace up with one pull.
-the pauldrons
-the armguards
-ALL THE METAL BITS (need heavy gauge metal for tip of scabbard).
-carve, inlay, and install the haft.handle of the sword.
-finish sewing the boots and figure out how to do the soles.
-design the sword strap so it will hang the way I want it to
-finish cutting the last of the skirt faulds so they can be sewn onto the skirt thingy.
-sew the skirt thingy.
-sew the Obi.
-sew the shirt.
-sew the cloak.

And that's just for my costume.

For other people:
-braid the strap for THE HORN and attach it.  Then mail it.
-carve the block stamp for Boromir's belt.
-figure out how said belt's hardware looks since it's almost always covered by the belt itself.  I think I'm going to just buy a D ring and solder the decorative bits to it.  Cheating?  YES.
-Vilya.  This will take but a day since I plan to CHEAT ALL THE JOINTS with ArtClay instead of solder.  A *lot* less cleanup.

All this while captaining a hockey team, organizing a team for the Duke City Marathon, being a mom, a wife, and working full time.

I *am* crazy.  But the costume is beginning to show its awesomeness.

11:09 pm - The week of (frantic) costuming
Most of you know, I took all of this week off to do nothing but get caught up on many things.  I got up at 6 am and crafted until 9, 10, sometimes 11 at night.

I loved it.  I need to make Neroon LeatherArts my main source of income so I can do this *every* week.  That's a long way away though.

So, here's what I accomplished:

-Finished the Horn of Gondor except for the strap- wicked_swann you need to let me know how long you want that to be.
-Trimmed up the breastplate for the Scout armor.  Running a minimum of 2 miles every day for weeks makes for armor that fits! Currently it has black leather trim glued to it pending sewing so I can roll it under and edge the dang thing so it looks better.
-Patterned the skirt portion of the armor (BITCH)
-Boiled up the leather for the skirt portion of the armor.  It's all hanging from doors drying slowly in the swamp cooler.
-Hacked out the block for the handle for my sword.  Split the block and need to start over.
-Carved out the wood portion of the scabbard.
-Dyed all the pieces of the quiver and painted the Telperion portions.
-Created the leg strap for the quiver.

My workshop is a disaster.

And now...pictures of the insanity!Collapse )

That's all I have for now (!!)

8:14 pm - Not ignoring the world...
Well, maybe the IRL world in favor of Middle Earth. Even missed Vox Populi.  Will post progress pics later, but the armor fits. Cutting the last piece of The Horn. Shaped the wood for the handle of the sword. Almost done assembling the quiver. It's been a very productive day in Middle Earth.

1:56 pm - Well, I'm back.
As I mentioned, latunda's grandmother passed on June 17.  She and I went to CA for the funeral while M stayed at my mom's house.  I am *so* glad I went with her, it was nearly a nightmare.  I hate human vultures, and I found myself seeing what happened at my own grandmother's death several years ago.  One side of the family willing to dredge up old grievances and perceived slights over stuff.  Granted, a lot of the "stuff" was things that Grandma Jane had painted or sewn herself, and a lot of the grandkids had memories associated with some of the pieces, but one piece in particular was contentious because everyone thought it was valuable.  I happen to know a few things about silver, and it was sad to see some people become totally uninterested once they found out it wasn't actually (monetarily) worth much.  That and I didn't particularly enjoy hearing one of the kids at the reception after the service be asked "Why are you so stupid?" by an adult.

There were a few highlights to the trip though.  First and foremost was getting to spend time with latunda without having to correct a child's behavior every 5 minutes. (M loves to play with Gimli.  It's really cute until she starts strangling him with the play string)  The memorial service was memorable because it was so awful- it was clear he hadn't done any prep, mis-read the story from latunda's mom, recited the 23rd Psalm 3 times, read the obituary from the newspaper practically word-for-word, and made absolutely no attempt to console the grieving family.  The best part though was when he was reading through the obit and got to latunda's name "and her...sp...spouse..." as he read my name, which is obviously female.  *snerk*  He got in his little dig later though, reciting a "statistic" about how this country is going to hell because only 1 in 5 homes has a mother and a father in it.  It was gratifying to see latunda's entire family try not to laugh at him.  *snerk*

The other real highlight was just being there.  For those of you who came to our wedding, you know what I'm talking about.  Vineyards abound.  The weather was practically perfect and it *rained.*  I wasn't sure what to do with all that water falling from the sky, so the day after I went running!

I am serious about doing this 1/2 marathon in October, so I am *in training* until then.  I did a 2 1/2 mile loop that included baby grapes and yearling calves.  And quiet.  I'd started out listening to my iPod but then remembered that rattlesnakes and large predatory cats tend to frequent the areas I was running in, so despite having mom's dog Sally with me I abandoned the iPod and just ran.  It was awesome.  I never really enjoyed running before, I guess because I'd never run cross country before.  I can't swear off the treadmill though, as the times I get to run during the work week is on my lunch break when I go to the gym.

The trip home was eventful, but only at the end, after we'd landed in Albuquerque.  We were waiting for the line out to clear when we saw a pilot do a walkaround of the port (left) wing.  My first thought that it was a new pilot doing his inspection. It's standard procedure, at least for military aircraft.  I didn't know there was an actual issue until we saw the covey of pilots conferring on the jetway about a bent flap on the wing.

Bent flap?  Uhhh, hello, BROKEN PLANE?

Well, it's all good I guess.  We got home to the wee one, who squealed when she saw us.  That made *everything* better.

I'm taking all of next week off to do nothing but craft, as I am now even further behind *cue panic* but I dreamed of a way to do the billets on the sword.

As promised- my Tweeps are asking too- progress pics!

I decided I needed to use a lighter gauge metal so it would hold the detail better.  It was a good choice.  Many, many hours of re-patterning (because I had to cut down the horn) and embossing has resulted in this:

My hands hurt like I"ve been carving leather all day...Collapse )

Time for bed for this little black duck.  latunda's grandmother finally passed today and it's been a little rough around here.  I'll try to get to a catch-up post for what else is happening in my life- a Half Marathon in October for Sean Astin's #Run3rd campaign!  CrAZy mE!

5:46 pm - This is why I love small cons.
1.  Spent a good 5 minutes talking with Katee Sackhoff while getting her autograph.
2.  Got a Jiujitsu lesson from a sensei who has a vlog filming in his dojo.
3.  Literally stumbled into Kevin Sorbo.  Yes, Hercules is in fact that built.  *drools*
4.  Spent 20 minutes talking to the producer of the Animaniacs before I realized who he was.  Then spent another 5 minutes talking to his agent, who also happens to be the agent for Peter Mayhew.
5.  Realized that next year I should get a booth for this con, if I can get enough stock done in time.  Almost had two commissions from people I was standing in line with but what they needed was not a technique I'm familiar with, so I turned them down.

No good news on the Grandma front.  She still hasn't woken up yet and they had to re-sedate her because she was showing cardiac arrythmias.  It's just not looking any kind of happy.

But today I was hugged by Hercules.

8:53 am - That other shoe.

We got one of those dreaded phone calls yesterday.  latunda’s grandmother collapsed at breakfast and has been unconscious ever since.  They’ve put her into a cryo-state that (hopefully) will keep her brain from swelling so much it kills her or puts her into a coma.  Of course, there’s the possibility that as they warm her up today she could go into a coma or die.

So I put latunda on a plane this morning.  M and I are staying here because we can’t afford plane tickets for all of us.

Don"t click on this unless you"re ready for some raw emotion and TMICollapse )

2:10 pm - Omens...
It's raining.  Enough to flood the streets raining.

I went to Mama's Minerals to paw through their rough lapis lazuli drawers and it rained the entire way there.  I found some goregeous looking stuff that while probably too small for what I had envisioned, will polish up beautifully.

It thundered as I stepped out of the store.

I will finish all this costume work and it will all be beautiful.

It's raining.
